The Chabot College men's soccer team is set to open another season under head coach Tony Igwe, a legendary former player for Nigeria in the 1968 Olympics and a three-time All-American at USF.
The Gladiators open the nonconference season at Redwoods on Friday, Aug. 30, and will play their home opener against Modesto on Sept. 3.
Igwe is still working through the roster, but the Gladiators have some quality players, such as forwards Andrew Granillo and Francisco Medina, winger Jose Garcia and goalkeepers Gustavo Rodriguez and Terrell Spears.
Chabot will open conference play at Evergreen Valley on Oct. 1.
The Igwe family has a rich soccer history. Three of Tony's children, sons Kelechi and Amaechi and daughter, Chioma, starred in soccer Santa Clara University. Tony, a three-time NCAA Division I champion at USF, has also coached at Stanford and Menlo College, as well as Menlo High School. Many of Tony's players have moved on to Division I programs.
