Brett McMurray was named Head Football Coach at Chabot College in 2025, bringing with him a
dynamic coaching background built on leadership in all three phases of the game, player
development, and academic excellence. Known for his work as a Defensive Coordinator, Special
Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, Strength & Conditioning Coach, and Academic
Success Coordinator, McMurray has developed a well-rounded, player-first approach to helping
build programs and building winning cultures.
Most recently, McMurray coached at Lake Forest College in 2024, serving as Linebackers Coach,
Special Teams Coordinator, and Recruiting Coordinator. In his time there, he coached two All-
Conference linebackers and an All-American return specialist, contributing to one of the most
productive seasons in recent program history.
In 2023, McMurray was the Defensive Coordinator at Kenyon College, where he also coached
the linebackers and helped develop three All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)
performers. His resume includes experience leading defenses and/or coordinating strength
programs at Sul Ross State University, College of the Redwoods, and Humboldt State University,
where he also served as the Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
McMurray’s coaching foundation includes stops at Southwest Minnesota State University and
Bemidji State University, working with linebackers, tight ends, and fullbacks while also assisting
in strength training and recruiting coordination. At nearly every stop, McMurray has taken on
dual or multiple coordinator roles, demonstrating his versatility and deep commitment to the
holistic development of student-athletes.
A proud product of California’s junior college system, McMurray played two years at Butte
College, where he was part of the 2008 National Championship team, before transferring to
Humboldt State to complete his playing career at the NCAA Division II level.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Humboldt State and a Master of Science
in Physical Education from Southwest Minnesota State University.
As Head Coach at Chabot, McMurray is committed to creating a program defined by physicality,
discipline, academic accountability, and a relentless pursuit of excellence on and off the field
