A SPLIT WITH ROOM TO GROW
The Chabot men's basketball team split a pair of games last week, falling to tough San Jose, 80-73, on the road and edging out Diablo Valley, 81-80, at home.
Interim head coach Marquis Glenn said he was "proud of the effort" by his young team against San Jose, adding "we can still get better."
After the winter break, the Glads (10-3) will wrap up nonconference play at home against Feather River at 5 p.m. on Jan 3. Chabot will open play in the challenging Coast Conference North at Skyline on Jan. 7.
Glenn described the DVC game as a "battle all night on the defensive end and rebounding. We are still learning how to be tougher and that comes with time. After every game we get better and better."
He says the team had not yet reached its peak.
"We will have a lot of time to rest during the break and get back rejuvenated and get prepared for the second half of the season," he added.
He attributed the loss to San Jose to a lot of factors — missed free throws, missed layups, unforced turnovers, not being poised at crucial moments. The Glads are not far away.
Zion Yeargin and Kamari King each had 15 points against San Jose, Amani Johnson had 13 points, and Oz Savage added 11.
Against DVC, Yeargin led the way with 21 points. Malik Merchant and Savage had 14 points apiece in the back-and-forth battle.
