YAHYA: WHAT A STEAL!
Chabot softball blazer Kailey Yahya broke the state record for stolen bases in a season with 70. She also leads the state in batting average at .580 over 32 games.
On a memorable Sophomore Day, Yahya stole eight total bases in a doubleheader split with Diablo Valley College on April 18, eclipsing the state stolen-base mark of 69 set in 2006 by Liz Perez of West Valley.
She was 4 for 4 with four stolen bases and three runs scored in a 15-6 win over the Vikings in the second game. She also earned the pitching win.
She had four base thefts and three hits in the first game.
"I'm very proud of her. What she accomplished this year was amazing," softball head coach Danny Calcagno said. "With the amount of games and innings she played in, it was quite a feat. If we hadn't had four games canceled and played in seven-inning full games, she could've stole 90. She is such a great person and was a pleasure to coach. "
A Cal State Bakersfield transfer and Rancho Cotate High graduate, Yahya, a left-handed pitcher-centerfielder, also set a state record with six stolen bases in a game, besting the previous mark of five.
The Glads (4-29, 1-12) have some things to build on for next season. Calcagno gives his players high marks for continuing to battle and showing improvement.
The first-year head coach proudly says the team doubled its overall win total over last season.
