GLADS SHINE ON MAT
The Chabot College wrestling team improved to 5-3 in dual matches with a 25-10 triumph over Skyline on Oct. 29.
For the Glads, Moheeb Niru and Daniel Sanchez won by decision, and Gabriel Reynosa and Rafael Roman-Amador earned major decisions. Elijah Sudaria won by technical fall, and Zeus Esparza secured a win by fall.
On Oct. 18, the Gladiators finished fifth in the 3C2A North Regional Dual Tournament. In the quarterfinals, Chabot fell to Sierra, 31-19. In the first round of consolation, they defeated Modesto Junior College, 30–17, but then lost in the consolation semifinals to Santa Rosa, 35-15.
In the fifth-place match, Chabot was tied with Skyline College, 23–23, heading into the heavyweight bout, where the winner would decide the dual. Dominic DeBo stepped up and won, 9–3, giving Chabot the 26–23 victory.
Standout performances included Sanchez, who had two major decisions and a decision; Sudaria and Esparza, who both had two wins by fall; and Roman-Amador and DeBo, who won all four of their matches. Roman-Amador scored 21 team points with one fall and three technical falls. A technical fall occurs when a wrestler gains a 15-point lead, ending the match early. Rafael is ranked third in the state.
On Oct. 10, the Gladiators placed sixth at the Modesto Junior College Tournament. Sanchez placed fifth at 157 pounds, Jake Blake placed second at 184, Dominic Sanders placed sixth at 197, and Esparza placed fourth at 197. DeBo won the heavyweight title, defeating the wrestler ranked sixth in the state by major decision.
On Oct. 9, the Gladiators fell 34-19 to Cuesta. Sudaria, Blake, and DeBo each earned victories, while Roman-Amador won by major decision.
