LOTS OF QUALITY IN SOCCER SPLIT
The Chabot College women’s soccer team split a pair of tough games last week
The Chabot College women's soccer team split a pair of tough games last week, falling 2-0 to Coast-South powerhouse Hartnell and beating Clovis 1-0 in nonconference play.
Head coach Dan Chubbock liked what he saw overall. "Two good games for us," he said.
In a physical battle at Hartnell on Oct. 8, the Panthers — ranked 15th in the state — prevailed on goals in the 25th and 26th minutes. But the Glads matched the hosts in many ways.
"Excellent performance," Chabot coach Dan Chubbock said. "We played hard and defended well, but were punished for a couple of mistakes in the first half."
The Glads (5-4-1, 0-1 Coast-South) went at Hartnell in the second half with two center forwards Marin Michieli and Hydayah Gaphoor.
"We caused them problems but couldn't get the breakthrough," Chubbock said. "A very physical game and a lot of ice bags after the game. Nothing too serious, but an eye opener for our freshmen on the level of play to expect in conference games."
Chubbock is happy to see his squad competing comparably against quality opponents.
The Glads were thrilled to get a win over Clovis on Friday, Oct. 11, courtesy of an unassisted goal by Melissa Esquivel in the 84th minute.
"Nice to see us get a win in another tight game, which could have gone either way (same as DVC, ARC and LPC). It's been coming!" Chubbock said.
He praised the work of goalkeeper Nat Hassmann, who made big saves, and the efforts of a beat-up back line buoyed by center backs Nyarah Anderson-Brown and Selena Davalos.
Jocelyn Gutierrez, Alexa Perez and Yadira Maldonado rotated in and out of the two full back positions.
Margarita Vinciguerra had another outstanding game in the midfield, alongside Esquivel, who hit the winner with an excellent 'dink' over the keeper, Chubbock said.
"You need those big moments from players in these games, and it was great to see the confidence to try it, as well as the technical ability to execute it," Chubbock said proudly.
