WOMEN'S SOCCER READY TO ROLL
With a goal to make the playoffs, the Chabot women's soccer team will kick off the new season at home against Contra Costa on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
Glads head coach Dan Chubbock is thrilled to have a new assistant coach Vanessa Jones, a coach with 24-7 UK Soccer, as well as the head coach of the Oakland SC women's team.
An Arroyo High graduate, Jones played at Division I University of Toledo.
"She has come in to help set, raise and maintain the standards of our program," Chubbock said of Jones. "The players have responded well to the tough approach and we are already starting to see the results on the field in practice."
Chabot is without five key sophomore starters from last season's team, but there's plenty of quality still in the mix.
The strong returners are defender Nyarah Anderson-Brown; midfielder Alexa Perez; defender Alekxa Gonzalez-Serrano; midfielder Samantha Villafan; and defender Ashley Tinoco.
Players vying for spots who were not eligible last year are defenders Wendy Son-Garcia and Jasmine De la Torre.
A key newcomer is Kiana Ayllon, who was due to start with Division 2 Westmont, but will play for Chabot instead. She will join the team next week and play center back or attacking midfielder.
"Huge add to the team," Chubbock said.
Other newcomers include goalkeeper Jessie Lighthill, a transfer from Ohlone; winger Abi Lopez (Elyssa's sister) from San Ramon FC; winger Keyla Ramirez, from Oakland Genesis; defender Elyssa Pena, from Hayward High; midfielder Mari De Leon, from Impact Academy; midfielder Sabrina (Sisi) Tinoco, from Hayward High; defender Stephanie Marquez, from LPS Hayward; and winger Yocelin Bolbito-Perez, from Merritt (2021).
Returners after a year away are center forward Elizabeth Tapia and defender Julie Lemoine.
Chubbock is frustrated about losing a few players as redshirts due to ineligibility, which will hurt the team's depth. Even still, he is pleased with the players he has on the field.
