GLADS KEEP BATTLING ON DIAMOND
It's been a tough nonconference run for the Chabot baseball team which has absorbed a litany of close defeats.
But the Glads (3-13) keep battling as they prepare for Coast Conference-North Division play. They are not that far away.
Last week they went 1-2 with a 4-3 defeat to Los Medanos, 6-5 win over host Cabrillo in 12 innings and a 12-10 loss to visiting Monterey Peninsula in 10 innings.
In the dramatic win over Cabrillo, hot-hitting Riley Winchell singled home Elijah Cernak with the winning run.
Winchell did his job well in the leadoff spot, going 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Joseph Coupland, Braden Spade and Juan Pablo Manzo all had two hits in the Nos. 2-4 spots in the lineup. Winchell, Coupland and Spade each had two RBI.
Chabot scored three in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Coupland's two-run double, to take a 5-3 lead, but Cabrillo scored twice in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.
In a wild one against Monterey, Winchell slugged a dramatic three-run homer and Spade scored on a wild pitch in a four-run seventh as Chabot rallied to tie it, 8-8.
Monterey homered in the eighth to lead 9-8, but Chabot's Terrell Scott-Romain went deep in the bottom of the inning and Winchell doubled home a run to put Chabot back ahead, 10-9. Unfortunately for Chabot, Monterey even it at 10-10 in the ninth and prevailed in the 10th.
This week, the Glads will travel to Hartnell on Tuesday, host Gavilan on Thursday, March 5, and travel to Ohlone on Friday, March 6 to open Coast-North play.
