GLADS MAKING THEIR MOVE
The Chabot baseball team is surging early in the Coast Conference-North Division season.
After dropping their Coast-North opener to Canada, 10-8, the Glads won the teams' next two meetings, 12-5 and 10-6.
Chabot power players are making a big mark. Riley Winchell and Joseph Coupland are tied atop the conference in home runs with six apiece, one more than Jonathan Shephard.
Terrell Scott-Romain shares the conference lead in stolen bases with 13.
Sheppard, hitting third in the lineup, came up big in the Glads' come-from-behind, 10-6 win over Canada on Friday, March 13, when they overcame an early 4-0 deficit. He was 4 for 5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI.
Winchell, the leadoff hitter and catcher, and Scott-Romain, the left fielder, also went deep.
Chabot erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning and tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth. During the pivotal fourth inning, Pablo Manzo doubled in a run, Elijah Cernak had an RBI groundout, Winchell hit a two-run shot, and Sheppard added an RBI double.
Edward Zacharia Said and Joshua Van Loon were very strong in relief over 8.1 innings combined. Said struck out eight and allowed one hit over 5.0 innings. Van Loon allowed two hits and fanned three over 3.1 innings.
On Thursday, March 12, Chabot took a 12-5 win over the Colts as Coupland, playing catcher, slugged two home runs and had four RBI.
Shortstop Braden Spade was 2 for 2 with a home run, and three RBI. Evan Wahilani Yau was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Luca Boccasille added two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Starter Aiden Perry (1-1) got the win, allowing two hits and one earned run over 4.1 innings. He struck out five and walked three. Declan Casey worked the save.
